All of creation, including humankind, is dualistic, with one part being body and the other mind. Each part has natural needs. That is, if our bodies are not hydrated and nourished, etc., then we will die. On the other hand, although not quite as obvious, if our minds are not nourished with intangibles, such as love, truth, and right, we become hollow; that is void of quality, meaning, and substance. I am seventy two and know that I am alive today because my physical needs have always been satisfied. So, I ask myself - if a person’s physical needs are met, why want more? There is only one real answer - greed, which drives most people today.
I put my trust in the old-time wisdom though. And grandma, I believe, had it right - principles and morality are first. She lived by credos such as, ‘right’s right, and wrong is nobody’. She would not go along to get along. Furthermore, no matter how little she had, she would always share. I remember one winter a woman down the street was going somewhere without a coat. She said, “I have two coats in the closet. Take one and give it to her.” She expressed her love with acts of charity, kind words, goodwill, and compassion (passion for the community). And no matter how hard her day was, before she slept, she would put her head to the planks and pray. Always and only to God. She would tell us, be careful - God is watching.
